Cover art The Picture Wagon
A children’s historical novel
Donna Getzinger
Based on a story by Elaine Getzinger Callard

THE BOOK

There have been a number of children's novels written about the American Civil War. The most successful of them are aimed at young boys, such as "Johnny Rebel" and "Red Badge of Courage." Now there is an exciting book about this part of our history written especially for nine to twelve-year-old girls. Author Donna Getzinger has written a historical novel full of adventure and intrigue titled "The Picture Wagon" about a young girl that is recruited to spy for the Union army. It is perfect for young history buffs!

SELECTED REVIEWS

"A wonderful story. I'd recommend The Picture Wagon to all young people wishing to get a feel for what life was like during the Civil War. Looking through the eyes of a youngster you can feel the excitement, the fear, and the wonder as she tries to survive a war being fought around her. An entertaining story as well as educational." -- Maureen Boylan - Scribes World

"The Picture Wagon recreates the excitement and drama of the Civil War from the perspective of young Joanna Prescott. While the novel is fiction, its authentic roots give it an immediacy and depth not to be missed."

"A captivating tale, vividly portraying a country torn by civil war. Both entertaining and enlightening, The Picture Wagon provides valuable insight into our shared heritage. Certainly we have learned that to forget our past is to repeat its mistakes. Bravo, Donna Getzinger, for this stunning reminder!" -- Cindy Penn, Senior Editor - Word Weaving

"A well-told story that will not only hold the interest of girls but of boys and adults too." -- Dimitri Rotov, Editor - Civil War Book News
