Rebecca climbed the stairs to her chamber. Her chores at the inn done, she looked forward to some quiet. Her feelings for Geoffrey confused her. And his kiss! She still tingled when she thought of it. She would retire early, she resolved. Perhaps, in the solitude of her room, she could reason through her odd reaction to the man.

Geoffrey found her there, at her door. He walked up behind her quietly.

"Good evening, Becca," he said in her ear.

She started and turned, surprised to find him standing close behind her.

"Geoffrey!" she gasped.

He smiled crookedly at her.

"Ah, so it's 'Geoffrey' again."

Rebecca stepped back, pressing herself against the panel of her door. Geoffrey moved closer, bracing an arm above her head. With his other hand, he gently caressed her cheek. She gazed into his eyes, lost in their blue depths. She could not hold on to a thought. His voice broke through to her.

"I wished to speak to you at dinner, but you were much too busy," he said, his eyes staring into hers. "Why do you think that is, Becca?"

"I..," she stammered. "That is..."

He ran his thumb slowly over the curve of her lower lip.

"I think the truth is that you cannot stop thinking about this morning," he said, his voice a caress. "About our kiss."

She drew in a breath, shaking her head.

"Yes," he insisted, gently grasping her chin to tilt her head up. "And neither can I."

The full meaning of his words penetrated. She could only watch as he bent his head to hers, his eyes darkening.

THE AUTHOR

JoMarie DeGioia has always been in love with the written word but only began writing seriously three years ago. While she has toyed with contemporary stories her passions remain in the Historical, bringing romance to her characters residing in nineteenth-century England.

She lives just outside Indianapolis with her loving husband, two well-read daughters, two snooty cats and one slightly dim-witted dog.
